Rewriting the narrative for the unbanked

Billet held the promise of democratizing money for the unbanked, those who had been excluded from the financial world for far too long. As I stepped into the role of UX Lead at Billet, I knew this was an opportunity to make a difference.

Billet, was not just another payment method. It was a gateway to a world of possibilities for those who had been left behind. With the power to transfer money in real time and recharge in mere minutes, it was more than just a wallet. Users could pay for deliveries, transportation, services, and even subscribe to their favorite apps, all from the palm of their hands.

Leading a team of 5 passionate Product Designers, I knew that our journey would be filled with challenges and growth. My responsibility extended beyond managing tasks; it was about fostering their potential through mentorship and support.

The first major milestone on our journey was the Digital Re-branding process. We envisioned a unified design language system that would span across 2 apps and 1 Digital Kiosk. It was a colossal task that demanded extensive research and dedication. We delved deep into understanding the brand’s essence and user preferences, crafting a seamless experience for all platforms.

But our work didn’t end with visual aesthetics. To truly design a wallet for users with no banking experience, we relied on constant user research. We established a robust feedback model, including curative, quantitative, behavioral, and attitudinal testing. With every interaction, we delved into the lives of the unbanked, turning their problems into opportunities for design.

Designing for these individuals was a unique challenge. We needed to break down barriers and create an experience that felt intuitive and welcoming. Empathy became our guiding principle as we crafted interfaces that spoke their language and simplified the onboarding process. We wanted Billet to empower them, giving them the tools to navigate the world of finance with confidence.

If you’re interested in delving into the intricacies of the design process and exploring the challenges faced by Billet’s centralized design team, I’d be delighted to discuss it over coffee. Additionally, to get a firsthand experience of our design work, I encourage you to download Billet from both the App Store and Google Play Store.
